A hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Adoration of the Christ Child by Flemish Renaissance artist Frans Crabbe van Espleghem.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Flemish artist Frans Crabbe van Espleghem depicts the Adoration of the Christ Child. The composition centres on the Holy Family, with the Virgin Mary kneeling in prayer before the infant, who rests in a simple manger. Saint Joseph kneels to the left, his posture reflecting a quiet, contemplative devotion. The scene is set within an architectural framework, suggesting a stable or ruined structure, with additional figures visible in the background, likely representing shepherds or travellers approaching the site.
Crabbe van Espleghem, active in Mechelen during the early sixteenth century, is known for his contributions to printmaking during a period of transition in Northern European art. The work exhibits the characteristic linear precision of the woodcut medium, further defined by the application of colour. The palette includes muted blues, ochres, and reds, which provide a sense of warmth to the devotional subject. The figures are rendered with a focus on narrative clarity, typical of the period's religious iconography.
The architectural elements in the background, including the pointed roof and stone walls, provide a sense of spatial depth. The inclusion of a halo around the Virgin Mary serves to distinguish the sacred nature of the figures from the surrounding environment. This print reflects the stylistic conventions of the Northern Renaissance, where the integration of domestic detail and religious narrative was common in devotional literature and broadsheets. The work remains a fine example of early sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, capturing a moment of stillness and reverence through traditional graphic techniques.
