A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Gerard de Jode depicting the biblical scene of the adoration of the seven-headed beast from the Book of Revelation.
This print by the Dutch cartographer and engraver Gerard de Jode depicts a scene from the Book of Revelation. The composition is contained within a circular frame, set against a square background with decorative corner motifs. The central subject is the seven-headed beast rising from the sea, a figure representing earthly power and corruption in biblical iconography. Figures in the foreground kneel in adoration, their posture suggesting submission to the monstrous entity. A lamb, often interpreted as a symbol of Christ, sits quietly on a rocky outcrop to the left, providing a visual counterpoint to the chaotic energy of the beast.
De Jode employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking. The hatching and cross-hatching define the forms of the figures and the texture of the beast, while the sky is rendered with vertical lines to suggest light or divine presence. The Latin inscription below the image provides context, referencing the thirteenth chapter of Revelation. This work reflects the period's preoccupation with apocalyptic themes and the use of print media to disseminate complex theological narratives to a wider audience. The balance between the circular narrative scene and the structured, decorative border is typical of the period's approach to book illustration, where clarity of form was necessary for the viewer to interpret the allegorical content. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate dramatic, supernatural subject matter into a small, portable format suitable for inclusion in a printed volume.
