A delicate 1943 pencil study by Dutch artist To Frank-Stoltz, capturing three figures in various stages of dressing with fluid, observational lines.
This pencil study, titled Aankleden, captures a sequence of figures in various stages of dressing. Executed by the Dutch artist To Frank-Stoltz in 1943, the work reflects the observational approach common in mid-twentieth-century figure drawing. The composition is divided into three distinct poses, each rendered with a light, exploratory touch that prioritises movement and gesture over rigid anatomical precision.
The left figure is shown from the back, providing a sense of stillness, while the central figure is captured with arms raised, suggesting the act of pulling a garment over the head. The figure on the right is hunched forward, focused on the task of fastening or adjusting clothing. Frank-Stoltz employs a thin, delicate line quality, allowing the viewer to see the initial construction of the forms. The paper retains the texture of a sketchbook page, complete with a date notation in the lower left corner, which provides a direct link to the artist's working process during the mid-1940s.
As a study, this piece offers an unvarnished look at the artist's method. Frank-Stoltz does not seek to create a polished final image, but rather to record the mechanics of human motion. The lack of heavy shading or background detail keeps the focus entirely on the silhouettes and the rhythm of the poses. This work is suitable for those who appreciate the raw, immediate nature of preparatory sketches and the history of twentieth-century Dutch figurative art.
