Abbey in the Oakwood is a seminal work of German Romanticism. Painted between 1809 and 1810, it depicts the ruins of Eldena Abbey in Greifswald, surrounded by leafless, gnarled oak trees. The composition is dominated by the verticality of the gothic window frame and the skeletal branches, which reach into a sky transitioning from the golden light of dusk to a deep, atmospheric grey.

Friedrich employs a low horizon line, which forces the viewer to look upward toward the ruins. In the foreground, a procession of figures moves toward the entrance of the abbey, their small scale emphasising the vastness of the natural environment and the weight of history. The ground is covered in snow, and the presence of grave markers suggests a burial site, reinforcing the themes of mortality and the passage of time.
