This print represents the cover of the influential instructional manual Ryakuga shiki, or Abbreviated Drawing Styles, authored by the Japanese artist Kuwagata Keisai. Born Kitao Masayoshi, Keisai was a versatile figure who transitioned from the traditional ukiyo-e style of the Kitao school to a more personal, minimalist approach. This publication was designed to teach students how to capture the essence of subjects through a limited number of brush strokes.
The cover displays the title in bold, calligraphic kanji characters, set against a plain, earth-toned background. The aesthetic reflects the artist's interest in simplification, a method that prioritised the economy of line over the elaborate detail common in contemporary prints. By reducing complex forms to their most basic geometric or gestural components, Keisai provided a practical guide for artists and enthusiasts of the period. The work is a primary example of the pedagogical literature that circulated during the late eighteenth century in Japan, aimed at democratising artistic practice.
