Joseph Blackburn was a British painter active in the American colonies during the mid-eighteenth century. This portrait of Abigail Chesebrough, later Mrs. Alexander Grant, displays the stylistic hallmarks of the period. Blackburn arrived in the colonies around 1754, bringing with him a refined approach to portraiture that appealed to the colonial elite. His work is characterised by a focus on the textures of clothing, particularly the sheen of silk and the delicate nature of lace, which he rendered with precision.
In this composition, the sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view, holding a folding fan. The white satin gown is painted with attention to the play of light across its folds, while the blue wrap provides a contrast in colour. The background features a glimpse of an exterior view, a common device in portraiture of the era to suggest status and setting. Blackburn often employed a lighter, more decorative palette than his contemporaries, reflecting the influence of the Rococo style popular in Britain at the time. The sitter's posture is composed, and her expression is one of calm reserve. The inclusion of small floral details in her hair adds a touch of naturalism to the formal presentation.
