Description
Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire developed beside its abbey and river crossing, with warm-roofed buildings and a slender church spire reflected here in the golden water of a quiet evening.
An historic market town in rural Oxfordshire, Abingdon-on-Thames grew in wealth around its abbey and the crossing of the Thames. The bridge was built by local initiative in 1416, establishing a lasting connection between the town's streets and its riverside setting.
A tall pointed church spire rises above gabled houses and a long red-brick waterfront building. Trees soften the gaps between roofs, while a white conservatory catches the warm light. Orange and mauve reflections stretch across the broad foreground river. Full leaves suggest summer, with a low sun appearing behind the right-hand trees beneath peach clouds.
