Description
A 1971 abstract work by Gérard Schneider, featuring bold, gestural brushstrokes and a primary colour palette typical of Lyrical Abstraction.
Gérard Schneider was a central figure in the development of Lyrical Abstraction, a movement that emerged in post-war Europe as a response to the rigid structures of geometric abstraction. This work, dated 1971, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the canvas: a focus on spontaneous gesture and the physical act of painting. Schneider rejected the idea of premeditated composition, preferring to allow the movement of his brush to dictate the final form.
The composition is dominated by a sweeping, curved black stroke that anchors the visual field. Within this arc, Schneider introduces primary colours: bold red and blue forms that interact with smaller yellow accents. The application of paint varies in density, showing the pressure and speed of the artist's hand. By placing these forms against a neutral background, he creates a sense of tension and release. The work does not represent external reality, but rather the internal rhythm of the artist's creative process.
Schneider's practice involved a rejection of traditional perspective. Instead, he utilised the interaction of colour and line to create a sense of space on the flat surface. His work from the 1970s often displays this economy of means, where a few decisive marks carry the weight of the entire piece. This print captures the texture and energy of the original oil painting, preserving the immediacy of his brushwork. It is an example of the artist's mature style, where the balance between control and chance is refined through decades of experimentation with non-figurative forms.
