An abstract composition by Dutch artist Bart van der Leck, associated with the De Stijl movement. This work features a sparse arrangement of geometric shapes in primary colours against a white background.
Bart van der Leck (1876-1958) was a Dutch painter, designer, and ceramicist. He is associated with the De Stijl movement, which sought a pure abstraction and universality by reducing form to the essentials of geometry, colour, and line. Van der Leck's early work was influenced by impressionism and symbolism, but he gradually developed a more abstract style. He worked alongside Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, key figures in the De Stijl group, though he later diverged from their strict theoretical approach. This untitled abstract composition exemplifies van der Leck's mature style. The work features a sparse arrangement of geometric shapes, primarily rectangles and squares, in a limited palette of primary colours (red, yellow, blue) and black, set against a white background. The composition is not symmetrical, but the distribution of shapes creates a sense of balance. The small grey dashes add texture and visual interest to the composition. Van der Leck's abstraction aimed to convey universal harmony and order, moving beyond the representation of the visible world.
