This abstract composition by Bart van der Leck features simplified geometric shapes in primary colours, reflecting the De Stijl movement's emphasis on pure abstraction and universal forms.
Bart van der Leck (1876-1958) was a Dutch painter, designer, and ceramicist. He is associated with the De Stijl movement, which sought a pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; he worked alongside Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Van der Leck, however, diverged from the group's later emphasis on the diagonal, preferring to retain a more grounded, representational element in his work. He aimed to create art that was both modern and accessible to a wider audience. This untitled composition exemplifies van der Leck's style. It features simplified geometric shapes in primary colours: a blue rectangle, a red trapezoid, and a yellow square. These forms are arranged against a white background, creating a sense of balance and visual clarity. The composition reflects the De Stijl principles of reducing forms to their most basic elements and using colour to create harmony and tension.
