A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniaki II, depicting a dramatic scene from the kabuki play Kanadehon chūshingura.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniaki II depicts a scene from the ninth act of the Kanadehon chūshingura, a classic kabuki play based on the historical vendetta of the forty-seven rōnin. The composition features two actors, Sawamura Tanosuke III in the role of Ōboshi Rikiya and Bandō Kamezō I as Kakogawa Honzō. The figures are positioned in a tense, confrontational stance, typical of the dramatic climaxes found in kabuki theatre.
Kuniaki II employs the traditional conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, using bold outlines and a flat application of colour to define the figures against a simplified architectural backdrop. The actors wear elaborate, patterned kimono, with the textures and folds rendered through precise line work. The scene is framed by a decorative border of triangles, a common stylistic device in prints of this period to contain the action. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted blues, purples, and greens to direct focus toward the central interaction between the two men.
As a member of the Utagawa school, Kuniaki II followed the established traditions of actor portraiture, known as yakusha-e. These prints served as both promotional material for the theatre and as collectable items for fans of the kabuki stage. The print captures the specific emotional intensity of the ninth act, where the characters navigate complex loyalties and personal duty. The inclusion of cartouches containing the actors' names and the play title provides necessary context for the viewer, identifying the specific roles and the source material. This work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the late Edo period, where the theatre and the print industry maintained a symbiotic relationship.
