Description
Acton Burnell in Shropshire is known for its medieval fortified manor, where red sandstone walls and tall traceried windows stand roofless above a green lawn shaded by surrounding trees.
Robert Burnell, Edward I's chancellor and Bishop of Bath and Wells, obtained permission to fortify his residence at Acton Burnell in 1284. The Shropshire house was designed for high-status living, with large first-floor windows suggesting display mattered more than serious defence.
Warm red and pale stone blocks form a tall rectangular shell, with projecting corner towers and a crenellated upper wall. Pointed windows retain slender tracery, while broken masonry reveals the roofless interior at the left. A broad green lawn lies beneath tree shadows. Full overhead leaves suggest summer, with bright daylight bringing out the varied colours of the stone.
