The performance took place at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1777, during the production of Masakado Kammuri no Hatsuyuki. Shunshō was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on the depiction of kabuki actors, and he is credited with moving away from the generic, doll-like faces of his predecessors toward more individualised portraiture.

The composition employs a narrow, vertical format typical of the era, allowing the artist to focus on the dramatic stance of the performer.
