A classic woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga featuring the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V in the dramatic Shibaraku role of Asahina.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V in the iconic role of Asahina Saburō. The scene captures a moment from the play Shibaraku, a performance known for its exaggerated style and dramatic flair. The actor is shown in a characteristic pose, his face painted with the bold, red-and-white kumadori makeup that signifies a heroic character in the aragoto tradition.
Kiyonaga employs a clean, graphic approach to the composition. The actor is wrapped in a heavy, voluminous robe decorated with the distinctive square-within-a-square crest of the Ichikawa family. The bold red colour of the garment contrasts against the neutral paper background, drawing attention to the actor's intense expression and posture. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the print provides context for the performance, a common feature in yakusha-e, or actor prints, of the Edo period.
Torii Kiyonaga was a master of the Torii school, which held a long association with the kabuki theatre. His work is recognised for its clarity and the balanced arrangement of figures within the frame. Unlike some of his contemporaries who favoured more crowded scenes, Kiyonaga often allowed his subjects space to breathe. This print demonstrates his ability to convey the energy of the stage through simplified forms and precise line work. The print serves as a record of a specific theatrical event, documenting both the costume and the performance style of one of the most famous actors of the eighteenth century. It remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in the production of ukiyo-e prints, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works that were accessible to a wide audience in Edo.
