A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei, capturing the dramatic flair of kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō in his signature Shibaraku role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō in the iconic role of the hero from the play Shibaraku. The actor wears the exaggerated, voluminous costume associated with this character, featuring the distinctive red and white square crest of the Ichikawa family. The bold, angular lines of the costume contrast with the delicate, refined features of the figure positioned above, who appears in a more ornate, patterned garment.
Shuntei, a pupil of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was known for his focus on warrior prints and theatrical subjects. His work captures the dramatic intensity of the Edo period stage. The composition relies on a flat, graphic arrangement that prioritises the visual impact of the actor's costume and the stylised kumadori makeup. The presence of calligraphic text surrounding the figures adds a layer of narrative context, common in surimono or actor prints of this era. The colour palette remains muted, relying on the natural ageing of the paper and the specific pigments used in early nineteenth-century printing techniques. This print offers a clear view into the conventions of kabuki portraiture, where the actor's identity is defined as much by their costume and stage presence as by their physical likeness. The work reflects the popular culture of the time, where prints served as both mementos of performances and promotional material for the theatre districts of Edo.
