A refined 1773 woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, capturing kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozō II in a traditional theatrical celebration.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozō II during a pre-performance celebration for the play Soga Monogatari, staged at the Morita Theater in the second month of 1773. Bunchō was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on portraits of kabuki actors. His work is recognised for its refined line work and the ability to capture the specific facial features of performers, moving away from the more generic representations seen in earlier prints.
The composition shows the actor in a formal pose, holding a tray with a small bonsai pine, a symbol often associated with longevity and the New Year season. The actor wears a patterned kimono with geometric and floral motifs, rendered with a controlled palette of soft greens, ochres, and muted pinks. The background features architectural elements typical of the Edo period, including a lattice window and sliding screens, which provide a sense of place without overwhelming the central figure.
Bunchō’s style is characterised by a slender, elegant depiction of the human form. Unlike the more exaggerated features found in later prints, his portraits maintain a degree of naturalism that allows the viewer to identify the individual actor. The print is a fine example of the benizuri-e technique, which utilised a limited range of colours, typically pink and green, applied to the woodblock print. This restraint in colour application contributes to the overall balance and aesthetic harmony of the piece. The print serves as a record of the theatrical culture of 18th-century Edo, documenting both the fashion of the period and the status of the actors who were the celebrities of their day.
