A refined woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozō in a traditional samurai role.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures the actor Ichikawa Yaozō in a dramatic theatrical pose. Bunchō was active during the mid-Edo period and gained recognition for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often focused on the specific mannerisms and facial expressions of performers in the kabuki theatre. This work exemplifies the artist's ability to distil the essence of a stage character into a singular, balanced composition.
The subject is depicted in a standing position, wearing a patterned kimono adorned with a repeating geometric motif. A prominent feature of the costume is the textured, fur-like garment draped over the shoulders, which adds a sense of volume and tactile quality to the figure. The actor holds a small object in one hand, while his other hand rests near the hilt of a sword tucked into his obi. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the refined aesthetic found in Bunchō's oeuvre. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted reds, and subtle greys, which allow the viewer to focus on the actor's posture and the graphic quality of the kimono pattern.
Unlike later, more exaggerated styles of actor prints, this image maintains a sense of poise and restraint. The figure occupies the vertical space of the paper with a clear sense of purpose, reflecting the conventions of the period where the actor's identity and stage persona were presented with clarity. The signature of the artist appears in the lower left corner, accompanied by a seal, providing a direct link to the production of the print during the height of the Ukiyo-e movement. This piece offers a window into the visual culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the theatre served as a primary source of entertainment and fashion.
