This approach, known as 'yakusha-e', prioritised the individual features and specific expressions of the performer on stage.

The composition centres on the actor in a crouched, athletic stance. He holds a katana, the blade angled across his body, creating a diagonal line that draws the eye. His expression is one of intense concentration, typical of the 'mie' pose used in kabuki theatre to freeze a moment of high emotion.
