Katsukawa Shunshō was a central figure in the development of the yakusha-e, or actor print, during the mid-Edo period. This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV, a performer celebrated for his onnagata roles, which involved the portrayal of female characters. Shunshō moved away from the stylised, mask-like faces common in earlier ukiyo-e works, opting instead for a more realistic approach that captured the individual features of the actor. This shift allowed audiences to recognise their favourite performers with greater ease.

The composition is clean and focused. The actor stands in a graceful pose, holding a closed parasol, which serves as a prop to define the character's movement and status. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre, muted green, and black ink to create a sense of balance. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the technical mastery required for the woodblock printing process. The kimono patterns are rendered with economy, providing visual interest without overwhelming the figure.

Shunshō founded the Katsukawa school, which influenced many later artists, including his student Katsushika Hokusai. His work provides a window into the theatre culture of 18th-century Edo, where the lives of actors were closely followed by the urban population. By focusing on the specific likeness of the performer, Shunshō elevated the actor print from a mere promotional tool to a form of portraiture.
