A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō, depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazō I in a dramatic role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazō I in the role of an otokodate, a chivalrous commoner or street knight. Shunkō was a member of the Katsukawa school, which moved away from the stylised, mask-like facial features common in earlier ukiyo-e prints. Instead, the school favoured realistic portraits that captured the specific expressions and individual characteristics of famous actors.
In this composition, the actor is shown in a dynamic, slightly hunched pose, conveying the bravado associated with the otokodate archetype. He wears a kimono with a bold, dark green and black check pattern, which contrasts with the muted tones of the interior setting. His facial expression is one of intense focus, typical of the aragoto (rough style) acting tradition. The print employs the nishiki-e technique, using multiple woodblocks to apply colour, resulting in a refined finish that was highly popular during the Edo period.
The background is kept minimal, allowing the figure to dominate the frame. The architectural elements, such as the sliding screen and the small wooden box, provide a sense of place without distracting from the actor. Shunkō's ability to render the weight and texture of the fabric, combined with the precise lines of the actor's features, demonstrates the technical skill of the Katsukawa school. This work serves as a record of both the theatrical performances of the time and the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo. It captures a specific moment of dramatic tension, reflecting the popularity of kabuki culture among the merchant class.
