A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, capturing the kabuki actor Sakata Hongoro II in a wrestler's role.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Sakata Hongoro II in the role of a wrestler. Bunchō was an active member of the ukiyo-e school during the mid-Edo period, known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints. His work often captures the specific mannerisms and physical presence of performers on the stage.
The composition focuses on the actor in a standing posture, his body turned slightly to reveal the costume details. The artist employs a restrained palette, typical of the benizuri-e style, which uses a limited number of colour blocks to define the figure against a neutral background. The actor wears a patterned garment adorned with maple leaf motifs, while his posture suggests the exaggerated stance of a wrestler. The lines are precise, defining the musculature and the facial expression with economy and clarity.
Bunchō often collaborated with Katsukawa Shunshō, and their combined efforts shifted the depiction of kabuki actors toward more realistic portrayals. This print reflects that transition, moving away from the stylised, generic faces of earlier periods to capture the individual features of the performer. The print serves as a record of the theatrical culture of 18th-century Edo, documenting both the costume design and the performance style of the era. The paper retains its original texture, and the ink application shows the characteristic layering of the woodblock process. This piece is an example of the technical skill involved in producing multi-block prints during the development of the ukiyo-e tradition.
