A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei, capturing the dramatic presence of kabuki actor Sawamura Sōjūrō 3rd in a traditional pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Sōjūrō 3rd. Shun'ei was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which moved away from the idealised beauty of earlier periods toward a more realistic portrayal of the performer.
The composition focuses on the actor in a dramatic pose, a common feature of the genre designed to capture the intensity of a stage performance. The actor wears a green kimono decorated with a white floral pattern, layered over a dark outer garment. His posture, with arms crossed and a stern expression, suggests a moment of tension or confrontation within a play. The background is simplified, using architectural lines to suggest an interior space, which keeps the viewer's attention on the figure.
Shun'ei's work is characterised by a focus on the individual features of the actor, often referred to as 'okubi-e' or large-head pictures, though this example shows the full figure. The lines are precise and controlled, typical of the technical skill required for multi-block printing in the late eighteenth century. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, blacks, and soft ochre tones to create a balanced visual effect. This print provides a record of the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan, documenting both the fashion of the time and the specific stylistic choices of the Katsukawa school. The print is a representative example of the shift toward character-driven portraiture in Japanese woodblock art.
