A refined woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō capturing the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojō II in a traditional Shakkyō dance performance.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojō II performing the Shakkyō (Stone Bridge) dance. The Shakkyō dance is a classic repertoire piece involving the mythical lion-dog, or shishi, which is often associated with peonies. In this composition, the actor wears a costume adorned with floral motifs, reflecting the thematic connection between the dancer and the blossoms surrounding him.
Bunchō was active during the mid-eighteenth century and gained recognition for his yakusha-e, or actor prints. His style is characterised by a slender, elegant depiction of figures, often capturing a sense of movement or specific theatrical gestures. The print employs a muted palette, typical of the period, with soft yellows, greens, and subtle ink tones. The inclusion of butterflies and peonies provides a decorative backdrop that frames the actor, creating a balanced visual arrangement.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, Bunchō contributed to the documentation of the Edo period theatrical world. His work provides insight into the costumes, performance styles, and aesthetic preferences of the time. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied through a separate carved woodblock. The lines remain precise, defining the folds of the kimono and the delicate features of the actor. This piece serves as a record of a specific performance, capturing the ephemeral nature of the kabuki stage through the medium of paper and pigment. The composition avoids excessive clutter, allowing the figure of the actor to remain the primary focus while the surrounding elements provide context to the dance narrative.
