A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicting two Kabuki actors in a dramatic, stylised pose from the mid-Edo period.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures a dramatic moment from the Kabuki theatre, a genre known as yakusha-e. The composition features two actors, Ichikawa Yaozō and Ichikawa Benzo, posed in a dynamic interaction. Bunchō, active during the mid-Edo period, is recognised for his ability to convey the specific personalities of performers rather than relying on generic facial types. His work often features slender figures and a refined use of colour, which distinguishes his style from the more robust depictions found in other schools of the time.
The print employs a limited palette, typical of the benizuri-e technique, where pink and green pigments are applied to a base of black ink. The figures are arranged to suggest movement, with one actor standing and the other crouching, creating a sense of tension. The inclusion of an umbrella as a prop adds a layer of narrative detail, suggesting a specific scene or play. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the contours of the costumes and the expressions of the actors with economy and grace.
Ippitsusai Bunchō was a significant figure in the development of the actor print, often collaborating with other artists such as Katsukawa Shunshō. His prints provide a window into the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo, who were avid consumers of theatre culture. The focus here remains on the theatricality of the pose and the stylised representation of the actors, reflecting the conventions of the period. This piece serves as an example of the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour required a separate carved block to achieve the final layered effect.
