A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicting two kabuki actors performing as sumo wrestlers in the benizuri-e style.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts two kabuki actors, Ōtani Hiroji and Bandō Sanpachi, in the roles of sumo wrestlers. The work belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the portrayal of actors from the Edo period theatre. Bunchō was known for his ability to capture the specific features and expressions of performers, moving away from the more generic facial types common in earlier prints.
The composition centres on the physical struggle between the two figures. The artist uses a restricted colour palette, typical of the benizuri-e style, which relies on a limited number of pigments, primarily pink and green, applied to the paper. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the musculature and the heavy, stylised forms of the wrestlers. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the dynamic interaction and the theatrical nature of the performance.
Bunchō was an active member of the artistic circles in Edo during the late 18th century. His work often appeared in collaborative books and single-sheet prints that documented the popular culture of the time. This print provides a record of how kabuki actors were perceived and presented to the public, blending the reality of the performer with the fictional persona of the character. The inclusion of a sign in the background adds a layer of context, suggesting a specific scene or location within the play. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to produce multi-colour impressions during this period of Japanese printmaking history.
