A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, capturing the theatrical intensity of kabuki actors Sanogawa Ichimatsu and Bandō Sanpachi.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts two kabuki actors, Sanogawa Ichimatsu and Bandō Sanpachi, in a dramatic pose. Bunchō was a significant figure in the development of yakusha-e, or actor prints, during the mid-Edo period. His work is noted for its focus on the individual characteristics of performers, moving away from the more generalised facial features seen in earlier ukiyo-e prints.
The composition employs a vertical format, typical of the hosoban size used for single-sheet actor portraits. The standing figure, Sanogawa Ichimatsu, holds a branch above his head, his posture suggesting a moment of tension or performance. Below him, Bandō Sanpachi is positioned in a seated, slightly reclined posture. The interaction between the two figures is defined by their contrasting stances and the careful arrangement of their patterned robes.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, muted oranges, and earthy tones. These colours are applied with a precision that defines the folds of the garments and the specific patterns of the fabric. The line work is clean and deliberate, capturing the expressive facial features and the specific hairstyles associated with the roles these actors played.
Bunchō often collaborated with other artists, such as Katsukawa Shunshō, to produce works that captured the fleeting nature of the theatre. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the celebrity of kabuki actors was a central theme in popular art. The absence of a complex background allows the viewer to focus entirely on the theatricality of the subjects. The print serves as a record of the costume, style, and performance techniques prevalent in the kabuki theatre of the late 18th century.
