A delicate etching by Luigi Conconi, capturing a portrait with atmospheric light and shadow typical of the Italian Scapigliatura movement.
This etching by Luigi Conconi, titled Ada, captures the atmospheric quality characteristic of the Scapigliatura movement in late nineteenth-century Milan. Conconi, who was both a painter and an architect, utilised the etching medium to explore light and shadow with a painterly sensibility. The work displays a soft, diffused focus, where the subject emerges from a dark, textured background through delicate cross-hatching and varied line weights.
The portrait depicts a young woman, her features rendered with a sense of fleeting intimacy. The artist avoids rigid outlines, preferring to build the form through tonal shifts. This approach creates a moody, introspective quality, typical of the artistic circles in which Conconi moved. The subject wears a hat, the brim of which casts a gentle shadow across her brow, further obscuring the eyes and adding to the enigmatic nature of the composition.
As a member of the Scapigliatura, Conconi rejected the academic precision of his contemporaries. He sought instead to capture the psychological state of his subjects. The print demonstrates his technical skill in managing the copper plate to achieve deep blacks and subtle greys, providing a tactile surface that invites close inspection. The rough edges of the paper and the visible plate mark remain, preserving the physical history of the printing process. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic concerns of the period, where the focus shifted towards the subjective experience and the evocative power of light. It remains a fine example of Italian printmaking from the late 1800s, reflecting a departure from traditional portraiture toward a more emotive and atmospheric style.
