This work belongs to the series known as the Transparencies, produced by Francis Picabia during the late 1920s and early 1930s. In this period, the artist moved away from the mechanical aesthetic of his earlier Dadaist output, choosing instead to layer multiple images upon a single surface. The composition features two figures, Adam and Eve, rendered with classical proportions that recall Greco-Roman statuary. Over these forms, Picabia overlays large, schematic facial features, specifically oversized eyes and a mouth, which disrupt the traditional representation of the biblical pair.

The technique relies on the superimposition of lines and forms, creating a sense of depth that is simultaneously flat and illusory. The palette is dominated by ochre, gold, and deep brown tones, which contribute to the aged, almost fresco-like appearance of the canvas. By merging the human figures with these floating, disembodied facial elements, Picabia forces the viewer to reconcile disparate visual planes. The tree to the right serves as a subtle nod to the traditional iconography of the Garden of Eden, yet the treatment remains distinctly modern and enigmatic.

Picabia was known for his restless experimentation, and this work captures his interest in the ambiguity of perception.
