Michelangelo's "Adam and Eve" is a fresco from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, depicting the moment of temptation in the Garden of Eden. The work showcases the artist's mastery of anatomy and dramatic composition.
This fresco by Michelangelo (1475-1564), an Italian High Renaissance painter, sculptor, and architect, depicts the biblical scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It is part of the ceiling decoration of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, commissioned by Pope Julius II. Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512. The fresco illustrates the moment when Eve accepts the forbidden fruit from the serpent, leading to the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. The composition shows Adam and Eve on either side of the Tree of Knowledge. Eve, seated, reaches for the fruit offered by the serpent, which is depicted with a human torso. Adam stands nearby, his arm extended towards the tree. The figures are muscular and anatomically detailed, characteristic of Michelangelo's style. The background is a simplified representation of the Garden of Eden, with a light blue sky and sparse vegetation. The scene is rendered in a palette of muted colours, with emphasis on the modelling of the figures' bodies through light and shadow.
