Description
Morris Louis's 'Addition V' is an abstract expressionist work featuring cascading vertical bands of translucent acrylic paint in reds, greens, and blacks, exemplifying the Color Field movement's emphasis on pure visual experience.
Morris Louis (1912-1962) was an American painter and a major figure in the Color Field movement, a style of abstract painting that emerged in the late 1940s. He, along with Kenneth Noland, was among the earliest artists to stain diluted acrylic paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colours to merge and saturate the fabric. This technique became a hallmark of Color Field painting. Louis's work is characterised by its emphasis on colour and form, with minimal attention to gesture or texture. He aimed to create paintings that were purely visual experiences, devoid of any narrative or symbolic content. 'Addition V' exemplifies Louis's mature style. Vertical bands of translucent acrylic paint cascade down the canvas, overlapping and intermingling to create a sense of depth and movement. The colours, primarily reds, greens, and blacks, are applied in thin washes, allowing the underlying canvas to show through. This technique creates a luminous effect, as if the colours are emanating from within the canvas itself. The composition is simple yet dynamic, with the vertical bands creating a sense of rhythm and flow. The painting's lack of a central focus or defined subject matter encourages the viewer to engage with the work on a purely visual level, appreciating the interplay of colour and form.
