A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Caterina Piotti-Pirola, depicting the Holy Family in a serene Nativity scene after Bernardino Luini.
This engraving by Caterina Piotti-Pirola reproduces a composition by the Lombard painter Bernardino Luini. The scene depicts the Holy Family within a rustic stable, a common subject in Italian devotional art. The Virgin Mary kneels in the foreground with her hands clasped in prayer, her gaze directed toward the infant Jesus, who lies upon a bed of straw. Saint Joseph stands behind her, his posture conveying a sense of quiet contemplation. Two small angels are positioned near the child, one playing a stringed instrument, which adds a musical element to the sacred event. To the left, the heads of an ox and an ass emerge from the shadows, grounding the scene in the traditional iconography of the Nativity.
The background reveals a distant, hilly terrain featuring a fortified castle and a small village, suggesting a European interpretation of the biblical setting. Above, a small angel appears in the clouds, signalling the divine nature of the moment. The print demonstrates the technical precision of nineteenth-century reproductive engraving, utilising a range of cross-hatching and stippling techniques to create depth and texture within the monochromatic medium. The drapery of the figures is rendered with particular care, showing the influence of Renaissance models on the artist's approach to form and light.
Piotti-Pirola was active in the mid-nineteenth century, a period when printmakers frequently translated the works of Old Masters for a wider audience. This engraving captures the gentle, lyrical quality often associated with Luini's style, characterised by soft facial features and a balanced, harmonious arrangement of figures. The work remains a fine example of the reproductive print tradition, where the engraver sought to maintain the spirit of the original painting while adapting it to the specific constraints of the copper plate.
