A satirical 1832 lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, mocking the political sycophancy of the July Monarchy through a parody of the Adoration of the Magi.
This lithograph, titled Adoration des Mages, appeared in the French satirical journal La Caricature in 1832. Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, a draughtsman and lithographer, utilised the medium to provide biting social and political commentary on the July Monarchy. The work depicts a group of figures in military and courtly attire gathered around a central throne, which is adorned with symbols of the French state, including the Gallic rooster.
The composition employs a satirical lens to mock the sycophancy of the political class during the reign of Louis-Philippe. By framing the scene as a parody of the traditional religious Adoration of the Magi, Raffet draws a parallel between the biblical homage paid to a divine figure and the opportunistic devotion shown by politicians to the new regime. The figures are rendered with exaggerated features and postures, a hallmark of the satirical print culture that flourished in Paris during the early nineteenth century.
Raffet was known for his technical skill in lithography, a process that allowed for the subtle tonal gradations visible in the shading of the uniforms and the atmospheric depth of the room. The print captures the cynicism of the era, where the trappings of power were often viewed with suspicion by the public. As a historical document, the work provides insight into the visual language of dissent in post-revolutionary France. The print remains a clear example of how artists used their craft to critique the shifting power structures of their time, moving away from the heroic depictions of the Napoleonic era toward a more critical, observational approach to contemporary life.
