A masterful 18th-century engraving by Raphael Morghen, reproducing the Nativity scene originally painted by Anton Raphael Mengs.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen reproduces the painting of the same subject by Anton Raphael Mengs. Morghen, a master of the burin, translates the painterly qualities of the original work into a precise system of lines and cross-hatching. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the Nativity, with the Holy Family positioned centrally, illuminated by a divine light emanating from the infant Jesus. Surrounding them are the shepherds, depicted with varied expressions of reverence and curiosity, while a choir of angels occupies the upper register of the scene.
The technical execution demonstrates the high level of skill associated with late eighteenth-century reproductive printmaking. Morghen employs varying densities of line to define the soft textures of the figures' garments, the rustic appearance of the stable, and the ethereal quality of the angelic forms. The contrast between the deep shadows of the interior and the bright highlights on the central figures creates a sense of volume and spatial depth. The inclusion of an inscription at the base of the print, detailing the original painting's location in the Royal Palace of Madrid, reflects the common practice of the period to document the provenance of the source material for the benefit of collectors and scholars.
As a reproductive print, this work serves as an example of how major compositions were disseminated across Europe before the advent of photography. Morghen was highly regarded for his ability to capture the tonal range of oil paintings through the medium of copperplate engraving. This print offers a clear view of the Neoclassical approach to religious themes, prioritising clarity of form and balanced composition over excessive ornamentation. It remains a fine example of the engraver's art, showing the meticulous attention to detail required to replicate the nuances of light and shadow found in the original painting.
