A 1890 etching by Félicien Rops depicting putti engaged in the printing process, presented as a commercial address card for the firm Nys & Mommen.
This work, titled Adreskaart van drukkerij Nys & Mommen, functions as a commercial address card or receipt for the printing firm Nys & Mommen. Created by the Belgian artist Félicien Rops in 1890, the piece demonstrates his technical proficiency in etching. The central image depicts a whimsical scene populated by putti, or small winged figures, who are actively engaged in the various stages of the printing process. These figures operate a printing press, handle paper, and manage the chemical tools required for intaglio work. The inclusion of a bottle labelled 'Eaux-fortes' (etchings) provides a direct reference to the medium itself.
The surrounding area of the paper contains handwritten notes, itemised costs, and a signature from F. Nys, confirming the document's original purpose as a financial record. Rops, known for his contributions to the Symbolist movement and his mastery of printmaking, often infused his work with a sense of playfulness or dark irony. Here, the juxtaposition of the professional printing environment with the mythological figures creates a unique visual narrative. The etching exhibits fine line work and a clear understanding of composition, typical of Rops's output during this period. The document offers a glimpse into the practical side of nineteenth-century print production, where the artist's hand was often required for commercial ephemera as well as fine art editions. The preservation of the handwritten ledger details alongside the etched vignette provides context for the intersection of commerce and artistic craft in late nineteenth-century Europe.
