A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Caspar Luyken depicting the interior of a Dutch textile merchant's shop in Amsterdam.
This etching by Caspar Luyken functions as a trade card for the textile firm of Jacob and George Roeters in Amsterdam. The composition provides a detailed view into the operations of an early eighteenth-century fabric merchant. The interior space is divided into distinct zones of activity, showing the storage, weighing, and sale of luxury textiles.
On the left, a merchant attends to a customer, presenting samples of fabric. Shelves stacked with rolls of material line the walls, suggesting the scale of their inventory. To the right, a worker operates a large scale to weigh bundles of silk, while other goods lie scattered on the floor, indicating a busy commercial environment. Through the central doorway, one can observe workers at a loom, connecting the retail space to the production process.
Luyken employs a precise, linear style typical of Dutch printmaking from this period. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the wooden architecture of the shop. A banner at the top identifies the firm, while a plaque on the counter lists the types of goods available, including gold, silver, and silk fabrics. This work offers a glimpse into the mercantile culture of Amsterdam, documenting the professional life and material goods of the era. The perspective is carefully constructed to draw the eye through the shop, from the foreground transactions to the workshop visible in the background. As a commercial document, it combines functional information with a narrative depiction of trade, reflecting the economic activity that defined the city during this time.
