A grand history painting by Ferdinand Bol depicting the Trojan hero Aeneas crowning the victor of a ship race, rendered in the style of the Dutch Golden Age.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this large-scale history painting during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition depicts a scene from Virgil's Aeneid, specifically the funeral games held in Sicily. Aeneas, the Trojan hero, stands to the right, placing a laurel wreath upon the head of Cloanthus, the victor of the ship race. The scene is staged with theatrical precision, featuring a heavy red curtain draped from a classical column, which frames the central action.
To the left, the masts and rigging of the ships dominate the background, providing a sense of scale and maritime context. Bol employs a warm, golden light that illuminates the figures, contrasting with the more subdued tones of the harbour. The figures are dressed in a mix of classical armour and contemporary seventeenth-century interpretations of exotic attire, a common practice in Dutch history painting of the period. The presence of a horse and a dog in the foreground adds a sense of immediacy to the ceremonial event.
Bol demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, a technique inherited from his time in Rembrandt's studio, though he later adopted a more classicising, polished style. The painting is carefully balanced, with the verticality of the ships and the column providing a structure for the crowded scene below. The attention to detail in the textures of the fabric, the metallic sheen of the armour, and the expressions of the onlookers reflects the technical skill expected of a painter of his stature in Amsterdam. This work remains a representative example of how classical literature was interpreted through the lens of Dutch Baroque aesthetics.
