A satirical lithograph from Daumier's Histoire Ancienne series, depicting a comical encounter between Aeneas and Dido in the underworld.
This lithograph is part of the Histoire Ancienne series, a collection of satirical prints published in the French journal Le Charivari. In this work, Honoré-Victorin Daumier turns his attention to classical mythology, specifically the encounter between Aeneas and Dido in the underworld as described in Virgil's Aeneid. Daumier strips away the grandeur of the epic, presenting the figures as mundane, slightly absurd characters. Aeneas stands on the left, depicted with a long, hooked nose and a somewhat bewildered expression, wearing a helmet that appears oversized and comical. Opposite him, Dido gestures with dramatic flair, a dagger still protruding from her chest, yet her posture and expression suggest a domestic grievance rather than a tragic encounter.
Daumier uses his characteristic lithographic style, employing fluid, expressive lines to define the figures and their exaggerated features. The background is sparse, with ghostly, indistinct figures suggesting the crowded nature of the underworld, yet the focus remains firmly on the interaction between the two protagonists. The text below the image provides a humorous commentary, framing the mythological meeting as a petty, modern-day argument. By juxtaposing the high-minded subject matter of classical literature with the visual language of caricature, Daumier critiques the pretension of his contemporaries who sought to elevate their status through references to antiquity.
This print demonstrates Daumier's ability to capture human folly through subtle distortion. His work for Le Charivari allowed him to reach a wide audience, using the medium of the lithograph to comment on social and cultural habits. The composition is balanced, with the two figures anchoring the scene, while the light and shadow work to create a sense of depth within the otherwise simple, graphic environment. It remains a clear example of his satirical approach to historical and literary themes.
