A masterful seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting the classical escape of Aeneas from the burning city of Troy.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts the classical narrative of Aeneas fleeing the destruction of Troy. The composition is based on a painting by Domenichino, which was held in the French royal collection. Audran, a master of the burin, translates the dramatic tension of the original oil painting into a monochrome medium through precise cross-hatching and varied line weights.
The central figure of Aeneas is shown carrying his elderly father, Anchises, upon his shoulders. Beside them, Creusa and the young Ascanius complete the group. The figures are rendered with anatomical clarity, reflecting the influence of the Italian Baroque tradition on French printmaking during the seventeenth century. The drapery folds are executed with technical rigour, creating a sense of volume and movement that defines the figures against the dark, atmospheric background.
Audran was known for his ability to reproduce the nuances of large-scale paintings for a wider audience. This print includes bilingual inscriptions in French and Latin at the base, which identify the subject and the original source material. The work demonstrates the high level of technical skill required for professional printmaking in the court of Louis XIV. The balance between the muscular form of Aeneas and the fragile posture of his father creates a clear narrative focus. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values prevalent in the seventeenth-century French academy, where the study of classical mythology and the emulation of Italian masters were central to artistic practice. The clarity of the engraving allows for a detailed examination of the expressive faces and the physical strain of the escape, capturing the gravity of the mythological event.
