A detailed 17th-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II) depicting a busy summer scene of sheep washing and rural life.

This engraving, titled Aestas (Summer), is a fine example of the technical precision associated with the Sadeler family, a dynasty of engravers and print publishers who operated across Europe during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Aegidius Sadeler (II) was particularly noted for his skill in translating the tonal qualities of paintings into the linear language of copperplate engraving. This work belongs to a series depicting the four seasons, a popular subject in Northern European art that allowed for the observation of daily life and seasonal labour.

The composition is structured around a large, gnarled tree that dominates the foreground, providing a frame for the busy scene unfolding by the water. Figures are shown washing sheep and engaging in various domestic tasks, reflecting the agricultural rhythms of the summer months. In the background, a fortified building and a bridge suggest a rural setting, rendered with the characteristic attention to architectural detail found in Flemish prints of the period.
