A 1893 lithographic poster by Marius Bauer, created to promote the Dutch translation of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's novella, Akëdysséril.
This lithographic poster, created by Marius Bauer in 1893, serves as a promotional announcement for the Dutch translation of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's novella, Akëdysséril. The work reflects the late nineteenth-century fascination with Orientalist themes, a subject that dominated much of Bauer's career following his travels to the Middle East and North Africa.
The composition features a large, sketch-like rendering of an elephant carrying a palanquin, a motif that captures the exoticised imagery popular in European literary circles of the period. Bauer employs a loose, calligraphic line quality, prioritising the atmospheric suggestion of the scene over rigid anatomical precision. The elephant occupies the left side of the frame, while the right side is reserved for the typographic details of the publication, including the translator K. J. L. Alberdingk Thijm and the publisher Scheltema & Holkema.
Bauer was a prolific etcher and draughtsman, known for his ability to convey the heat and dust of Eastern locales through rapid, energetic mark-making. In this poster, the monochromatic palette and the integration of text with illustration demonstrate the period's approach to graphic design, where the advertisement itself functioned as a piece of fine art. The inclusion of the elephant, a symbol often associated with the grandeur of the East in Western art, aligns with the narrative content of the novella. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative efforts between artists, translators, and booksellers in the late nineteenth-century Dutch literary scene, providing a record of the aesthetic values that shaped the presentation of translated fiction during this era.
