A surreal, circular composition by Fred van der Wal featuring fragmented anatomical forms and clinical instruments in a high-contrast graphic style.
Fred van der Wal, a Dutch artist known for his graphic precision and unsettling thematic choices, presents a composition that merges clinical observation with a disorienting, circular arrangement. The title, translated as 'Severed Limbs', provides a literal entry point into a work that functions through repetition and visual rhythm. The central motif is anchored by a clinical thermometer, suggesting a diagnostic or surgical context that contrasts with the rhythmic, almost hypnotic placement of human limbs and figures around the perimeter.
The use of a high-contrast palette, dominated by saturated orange tones against a deep cyan and black striped background, creates a sense of optical vibration. This choice of colour forces the viewer to engage with the image as a graphic object rather than a traditional representational scene. The limbs are depicted with a flat, illustrative quality, stripped of individual identity and arranged to form a radial pattern that draws the eye toward the centre.
Van der Wal employs a specific visual language here, one that borrows from the aesthetics of mid-century medical illustration and pop art, yet subverts these styles through the inclusion of fragmented anatomy. The presence of scissors and the thermometer introduces a narrative of intervention, though the exact nature of this procedure remains ambiguous. The work avoids a singular perspective, instead opting for a flattened, ornamental structure that emphasises the decorative potential of the macabre. By removing the subject from a realistic environment, the artist forces a focus on the interplay between the organic forms of the body and the rigid, geometric background. This piece is a clear example of the artist's ability to balance technical control with a challenging, often surreal, subject matter.
