A late-period pastel study by Edgar Degas, capturing a woman in a private moment of her toilette with soft, layered colour and textured mark-making.
Edgar Degas produced a series of works in his later years focusing on the private rituals of women at their toilette. This pastel composition captures a moment of quiet activity, where the subject is seen from behind, hunched over as she dries her back with a towel. The perspective is characteristic of the artist, who often positioned his subjects in ways that suggest a voyeuristic, unposed glimpse into their personal space.
The application of pastel is layered and textured, creating a soft, diffused effect that obscures sharp outlines. Degas utilised the medium to build form through colour rather than line, allowing the skin tones to blend with the surrounding environment. The palette consists of muted ochres, soft pinks, and cool blues, which unify the figure with the fabric of the towel and the background drapery.
By the 1890s, Degas had moved away from the precise draftsmanship of his earlier career, favouring a more experimental approach to mark-making. The composition is cropped tightly, focusing attention on the physical exertion of the woman. This work reflects the artist's interest in the mechanics of the human body in motion, a theme he explored through his depictions of dancers, laundresses, and bathers. The lack of idealisation in the pose provides a sense of authenticity, removing the artifice often associated with academic figure painting. The work remains a primary example of his late-period style, where the physical act of drawing becomes as visible as the subject itself.
