A haunting Symbolist work by Wilhelm Kotarbinski, depicting two winged figures in a twilight setting, exploring themes of mortality and the afterlife.
Wilhelm Kotarbinski, a Polish painter active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, produced this work during his time in Kyiv. The painting belongs to the Symbolist movement, a period defined by an interest in dreamlike states, mythology, and the exploration of the human condition through allegorical figures.
In this composition, two winged figures stand at the edge of a dark, still body of water. The male figure, possessing dark, expansive wings, holds a glowing orb, while the female figure, draped in light fabric, leans towards him. The scene is set under a twilight sky, punctuated by a single bright star. Small, flickering lights float upon the water, suggesting a ritualistic or funerary context. The atmosphere is quiet and melancholic, typical of Kotarbinski’s approach to themes of mortality and the afterlife.
Kotarbinski often utilised a muted, cool colour palette to create a sense of distance and mystery. His brushwork is soft, allowing the forms to merge with the hazy environment. The figures appear detached from the physical world, existing in a space between reality and myth. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, heavy wings of the male figure and the lighter, more ethereal presence of the female. By placing the figures in a vast, empty setting, the artist directs attention to their interaction and the symbolic weight of the objects they hold. This work reflects the broader European interest in the macabre and the mystical that characterised much of the art produced at the turn of the century.
