A 16th-century calligraphic fan leaf by Wen Peng, interpreting the classic 'Foxglove Broth Letter' by Wang Xianzhi in fluid, expressive ink.
This work by Wen Peng (1498-1573) is a masterful example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy, executed in the form of a fan leaf. Wen Peng, the eldest son of the celebrated artist Wen Zhengming, was a central figure in the Suzhou school of calligraphers. He is particularly noted for his dedication to the study of classical models, a practice evident in this piece where he interprets the 'Foxglove Broth Letter' originally attributed to the Jin Dynasty master Wang Xianzhi (344-385).
The calligraphy displays a fluid, cursive script that balances speed with controlled precision. Wen Peng captures the rhythmic quality of the original text, allowing the ink to vary in density as the brush moves across the gold-flecked paper. The composition is constrained by the fan shape, yet the characters maintain a sense of open space and structural integrity. Each column of text flows with a natural energy, reflecting the artist's deep familiarity with the lineage of Chinese script styles.
In the tradition of literati art, this piece functions as both a tribute to historical masters and a demonstration of the artist's own technical command. The use of gold-flecked paper provides a warm, reflective ground that contrasts with the deep black ink, creating a visual harmony typical of high-status fan paintings from the period. Two red seals are visible, providing a small but necessary visual anchor to the composition. This print captures the subtle textures of the original ink and the specific sheen of the paper, offering a clear view of the brushwork that defines Wen Peng's contribution to the history of Chinese calligraphy.
