A watercolour by John Ruskin depicts a view of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The work reflects his interest in capturing the atmospheric conditions and geological formations of the landscape.
This watercolour by John Ruskin (1819-1900), the British art critic, writer, and artist, depicts a view of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Ruskin was known for his detailed observations of nature and his advocacy for the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which emphasised truth to nature and meticulous detail. This work reflects his interest in capturing the atmospheric conditions and geological formations of the landscape. The composition is divided into horizontal bands, with the lake in the foreground, followed by a strip of land, then the distant mountains, and finally the sky filled with clouds. The artist uses delicate washes of colour to convey the light and atmosphere of the scene. The water is rendered in shades of turquoise and blue, with subtle variations suggesting movement and depth. The land is depicted with greens and browns, while the mountains are shown in muted greys and whites, indicating snow-capped peaks. The sky is filled with soft, billowing clouds, rendered in pale blues and greys, adding to the overall sense of tranquility and natural beauty. The thin lines and delicate brushwork are characteristic of Ruskin's watercolour technique.
