A study of Agapanthus flowers from the artist's garden at Giverny, rendered with loose, expressive brushwork and a focus on light.
This work captures the Agapanthus plants within the artist's garden at Giverny. During his later years, Monet focused his attention on the flora surrounding his water garden. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a close-up view that fills the frame with stems and flower heads. The brushwork is loose and gestural, prioritising the sensation of light and movement over precise botanical detail.
Monet applied paint in thick, overlapping layers. He used a palette dominated by various shades of green, punctuated by violet and blue tones that define the petals. The stems appear as rhythmic, vertical elements against the swirling, textured background of foliage. This approach reflects his interest in the atmospheric conditions of his garden, where the boundaries between the plants and the surrounding air seem to dissolve.
By this period, Monet had moved away from the structured compositions of his earlier career. He embraced a more immersive style, often working on large-scale canvases that surrounded the viewer. This specific study demonstrates his ability to transform a familiar garden subject into a study of colour and light. The lack of a clear horizon line forces the viewer to engage directly with the surface of the painting, observing the physical application of pigment. It is a representative example of his late-period work, where the act of painting became as important as the subject itself. The focus remains on the interplay of cool and warm tones, creating a sense of depth through colour temperature rather than linear geometry. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing for an appreciation of the artist's technique and his dedication to observing the natural world in his final decades.
