This work serves as an illustration for Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Overcoat. The scene captures the protagonist, Akaky Akakiyevich, navigating the bustling Nevsky Prospekt at night.
Kustodiev employs charcoal to create a heavy, atmospheric quality that mirrors the oppressive nature of the city as described in Gogol's narrative. The figures are rendered with a sense of anonymity, their faces obscured by shadows and heavy winter attire. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, cloaked individuals in the foreground and the faint, ghostly architecture of the city in the background.
