Arman Manookian, an American artist of Armenian descent, produced this work during his brief but active period in Hawaii. The painting depicts the Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu, rendered through a modernist lens that prioritises simplified forms and bold, non-naturalistic colour choices. The composition is structured around the horizontal reflection of the structures in the water, contrasted against the verticality of the stylised trees.

Manookian employs a flattened perspective, typical of the modernist movements of the early twentieth century. The sky is a striking, saturated red, which pushes the dark, silhouetted foliage into the foreground. The architecture of the canal-side buildings is reduced to geometric planes of yellow and ochre, creating a rhythmic pattern that echoes across the water surface.
