A poignant 1905 documentary photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine, capturing an Albanian family arriving at Ellis Island with their belongings.
Captured in 1905, this photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine documents the arrival of immigrants at Ellis Island. Hine, a sociologist and photographer, used his camera to record the human experience of those entering the United States. His work often focused on the conditions of labourers and the displaced, providing a record of the early twentieth-century American experience.
The image shows an Albanian woman holding an infant, accompanied by two older children. They stand amidst their luggage, which is marked with handwritten labels and tied with rope. The composition is direct, placing the subjects in the foreground against a backdrop of stacked trunks and crates. The woman wears a headscarf and a long, dark skirt, while the children are dressed in simple, worn clothing. The boy carries a large sack over his shoulder, suggesting the weight of their journey.
Hine approached his subjects with a sense of dignity, avoiding the sensationalism often found in contemporary press photography. By documenting the individuals at Ellis Island, he provided a visual account of the migration patterns that shaped the nation. The lighting is natural, reflecting the environment of the processing centre. The focus remains on the expressions of the subjects, who appear weary yet composed. This print offers a view into a specific moment of transition, capturing the uncertainty and resilience of those seeking a new life. The clarity of the gelatin silver process preserves the textures of their clothing and the rough surfaces of their belongings, grounding the image in a tangible reality.
