A woodblock print from the 'Album of Flowers and the Moon' by Mori Tetsuzan, featuring kage-e style silhouettes and Japanese calligraphy.
This print originates from the 'Album of Flowers and the Moon' (Kagetsu jō), a collection of works by Mori Tetsuzan. Tetsuzan was a student of Maruyama Okyo and a significant figure in the Maruyama-Shijo school of Japanese painting. This specific work employs the kage-e, or shadow picture, technique. The figures are rendered as solid silhouettes against a plain, light-toned background, which emphasises their gestures and physical forms rather than individual features or clothing details.
The composition features several figures in dynamic poses, accompanied by calligraphic text that provides narrative context. The use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the characters. The inclusion of everyday objects, such as small pots and a low table, grounds the scene in a domestic or social setting. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to convey movement and character through minimal visual information, a hallmark of the shadow-picture genre popular during the Edo period.
Mori Tetsuzan is known for his technical skill and his contribution to the development of naturalistic styles within the Japanese tradition. His work often bridges the gap between formal painting and the more accessible, popular art forms of the time. This piece is an example of the playful and experimental nature of woodblock printing during the early 19th century. The paper texture and the muted ink tones reflect the original aesthetic of the woodblock medium, providing a clear view of the artist's intent. The print is a study in simplicity, relying on the silhouette to define the narrative action without the need for complex shading or colour. It remains a clear example of the artistic output associated with the Maruyama-Shijo school's interest in observation and stylistic variety.
